How to Style Women’s Thin Hair

Not sure how to style thin hair? Find the best look for your locks with these volume-boosting tips and tricks.:

Woman drying hair with towel
  • Gently pat freshly washed hair with a microfiber towel to absorb moisture and minimize hair breakage.

  • Treat thinning hair with gentle care, and avoid over-brushing, washing, and processing, all of which can further damage already fragile strands.

  • Use a quality wide-tooth comb if you have curly or wavy hair, or a hairbrush with soft, rounded bristle tips for straight hair; make these your new grooming tools to prevent further disruption of thinning hair.

Woman washing hair
  • Lather up with a volumising shampoo and conditioner duo. Look for a gentler shampoo that is residue-free, weightless, and sulphate-free (sulphate tends to strip hair of its natural oils, which results in dry hair).

  • Wash your hair only when it is dirty. If you can, shampoo every other day to diminish damage from over washing. To stretch the time between washes, try a dry shampoo.

  • Get rid of any fine-tooth combs and brushes with sharp bristles. These tools can increase the breakage of hair. Turn your head upside down to blow-dry your hair when you are in a rush and don’t have time to pat-dry it. This is an easy way to give your thin hair a powerful boost, making it appear more voluminous.

Woman wearing sun hat
  • Turn your head upside down to blow-dry your hair.  This can be particularly handy when you are in a rush and don’t have time to pat-dry it. This is an easy way to give your thin hair a powerful boost, making it appear more voluminous.

  • Adopt a more tousled, casual, wash-and-go hairstyle. This is easier to pull off and maintain with thinner hair, and any trouble spots can easily be handled with a little back brushing to give the appearance of more volume.

  • Use volumising styling products. Add volumising styling products like mousse to your styling routine. Apply at the root area, blow dry and apply gentle tension with a brush to create volume.

Haircuts for Women with Thinning Hair

DO:

  • Get regular trims. Keeping split ends at bay can make your locks look thick and healthy.

  • Ask for a subtle layer. No matter if your hair is thin, wavy, or curly, a layered cut is a fantastic way to create dimension.

  • Try a zigzag part to add a little extra volume at the roots.

 DON’T:

  • X Keep your hair one length. Layers can help your hair look fuller.

  •  X   Rule out a chic pixie cut

  • X Get hair extensions. It might be tempting, but the procedure can actually lead to further hair thinning due to the pull from the extensions.

Women’s Hairstyles for Thinning Hair

Unsure of hairstyles that compliment thinning hair? We’ve rounded up a list of hairstyles for you to think about before your next hair dresser appointment:

Older woman

The Classic Bob

A good old bob looks great on those with shorter hair. If you’re not convinced about a straight bob, try an asymmetrical one, which will pull attention to the ends of your hair rather than the roots, where there might be a lack of volume. Part the hair to one side for an added boost!

Deep Side Part

If your hair is on the longer side, the deep side part is a clever hairstyle to try. With a deep side part, you’re essentially lumping all of your hair together on one side, creating the illusion of volume.

Thick Fringe/Bangs

Whatever your style may be, incorporating a fringe never fails to volumise thin hair. Just make sure your fringe is thick—the blunter the better. Having a thick fringe adds density, bringing body to the front. Add a deep side part and blunt, shoulder-grazing ends to the thick fringe and you’ve got a winning haircut.

Try a pop of colour

When it comes to giving your thinning hair a boost, a little colour can help. Not only can colour and highlights help to plump up strands, they can also help create an illusion of depth. Below are a list of colour tips to help guide your conversation with your hair dresser.

DO:

  •  Opt for highlights or lowlights around the face - to give your hair some dimension and warm up your overall look. Add gold tones if you’re a brunette or a redhead - it will instantly warm the face.

  • Stay away from ombré tones. Dark hair on top and light tips on the bottom can draw attention to any thinning at the crown.

  •  Regaine®  for Women Once A Day Scalp Foam can be used on dyed hair. Tell your hair care professional that you are using Regaine.

DON’T:

XGo too dark if you’re exploring new hair colours- this can emphasize the contrast between the scalp and the hair if your skin is lighter than your hair.

X Go crazy with the bleach. Platinum blonde dye can be too harsh and cause hair to become dry and brittle.

X Avoid colouring your hair-just stick to the right shades. This means avoiding extremely light or dark hues and favouring deep and rich shades that are close to your natural shade.

Things to Avoid with Women’s Thinning Hair

When it comes to caring for your hair and scalp, there are some things that you don’t want to be doing. To help you take the best care of your tresses, we’ve compiled a list of things to avoid.

Woman brushing hair

X Don’t pull, tug, or yank at roots when brushing a wispy head of hair.

X Don’t make the turban towel-wrap a part of your post-shower hair routine as this requires twisting, turning, and pulling on your hair, which can lead to nasty hair breakage.

X Don’t over-condition thinning hair, this can weigh it down and flatten it. Apply conditioner only to the bottom two-thirds of your hair strands, or choose a lightweight leave-in conditioner, such as a mist formulation.

Woman tying hair up

X Don’t gather your thinning hair into tight hair bands, wrap hair bands around your head, or pull hair firmly into clips. When you have thin hair, “loose” is the key word.

Woman sleeping

X Don’t let too much time pass between haircuts. Split ends can inch up your mane, making tresses look even thinner and strands sparser.

X Don’t sleep on a pillowcase made of a rough fabric. Replace cotton cases with silky-smooth ones to reduce friction on your hair.

X Don’t sleep on wet hair. Fine hair just doesn’t bounce back the same way thicker hair does.
